Our Outdoor Classroom (Spring 2010)

In July 2009, we sent off plans for an outdoor classroom, to enhance the quiet area of the school playground. As well as building plans, we also needed to acquire 'LIsted Building' consent. We finally got the go-ahead in December 2009 and work commenced on 22nd February 2010. Please click on each of the images below to see how the work progressed.

This is the schematic design for our outdoor classroom, produced in July 2009, which shows the seating layout. This is the artist's impression for the finished design. The delivery lorry arrives on Monday 22nd February 2010. The materials are unloaded in the quiet area of the playground.Solid looking timbers are stacked on the playground in readiness for the work to begin. The start of day two starts with the health and safety fence being put up! Holes are dug for the footings for the uprights. Railway sleepers are laid to form planters.Taking shape! A new look to the quiet area emerges! A view from above! Busy at work!COnstructing the stage! Positioning the seating! Holes need to be dug to place the seats and benches in. The story teller's chair and benches were installed after holes had been dug through the inches-thick concreteCrowds gathered at playtime and lunchtime as the children could finally see what the final construction is going to look like. All that is needed is the surfacing for the floor. The canopies have been fitted. These should provide a great place to sit, once the weather improves! The story teller's chair looks good! The weather improves and the machinery is moved in for the wet pore! The wet pore is mixed! A crowd gathers to watch the work! The surface is carefully smoothed over. Taking pride in their work! What a difference the wet pore makes! A good job!
