Last Day of the half term !
This half term has only been four weeks long and it ends today. There is a staff training day tomorrow. Pupils should return to school on Monday 2nd June.

100% Attendance during the First Summer Half Term !
During the four weeks of this half term, we have had quite a number of pupils who have managed 100%. This morning, we had our prize draw. The names of all the pupils who achieved 100% in the Reception to year 6 classes were placed in the draw and the winner was. Alex M from year 1.

Reception: 25 pupils had 100% (83% of pupils in this class)
Year 1: 24 pupils (80%)
Class 2/3a: 21 pupils (72%)
Class 2/3b: 24 pupils (83%)
Class 4/5a: 19 pupils (79%)
Class 4/5b: 17 pupils (71%)
Class 6a: 16 pupils (84%)
Class 6b: 14 pupils (82%)
Total for the school: 160 pupils (79%)

Holidays !
May we remind everyone that pupils should not be having holidays during the term time.  There are only 190 days in the school year and all these are crucially important. The school will not authorise anyone taking pupils out of term time for this reason.

The Stepney Sloggers, Back in Action !

Last year, the staff rounders' team, called 'The Stepney Sloggers' finished in second place within the schools' staff rounders' league. This evening, they competed in a 'Corporate Cup' tournament against some established teams, such as the Hull Daily Mail team, who had players with thirteen years playing experience. There were eight teams in today's tournament. In the first round, the teams were divided into two groups. Stepney Sloggers won their first match, lost the second and won their third. They finished second in group 1 and progressed to the semi-finals, where they lost and then finished fourth in the play-offs. Once again, 'The Sloggers' played well. Captained by Mr Browning, the team also consisted of Mr Darwood, Mr Dear, Miss Hatfield, Mr Ingram, Miss Laybourne, Miss Northen, Mr Rookyard and Miss Hatfield's friend, Miss Cable.

Healthy Eating Week 2nd - 6th June !
The first week of next half term is Healthy Eating Week.  The children's class work this week will have a 'being healthy' focus with Writing, Science and PSHCE all based on these themes.
In addition, we will be sending home a 'Being Healthy' diary to complete at home during the week.  There will be a sticker for each diary returned and one prize per class (to be drawn 'out of the hat').
Could we also remind parents that we have a 'healthy packed lunch policy'. This contributed to us achieving our Healthy Schools Award.  Our policy says that there should only be one small 'treat' (eg a chocolate biscuit) alongside a savoury snack (eg sandwich), drink of juice, milk or water, at least one piece of fruit/veg. Unfortunately, we are seeing an increasing number of sweets and chocolate bars in packed lunches.  We know that if children are healthy they behave and learn well, so we would really like your support with this.
The foodafactoflife website provides this checklist for parents, which you may find useful.

Lunchbox checklist
- a good portion of starchy food, e.g. thick wholemeal bread, chapatti, pasta or rice salad?
- plenty of fruit and vegetables?
- a portion of milk or dairy food, e.g. individual cheese portion or pot of yogurt?
- a portion of lean meat, fish or alternative, e.g. ham, chicken, beef, tuna, egg, hummus or bean/lentil salad?
- a drink?

Farm to Fork at Tesco !
This morning, our Reception pupils went to the big Tesco store in St Stephen's as part of an initiative called 'Farm to Fork'. This is aimed at helping pupils to understood how food gets from the farm to their dinner tables. To start with, they travelled on a public bus, which was a new experience for many of them. Once inside Tesco, they went to the bakery and had the chance to make their own bread (which they brought back to school with them). They then looked at different sea food, tried different products, such as chocolate and orange cheese and went into the refridgerated warehouse to see how food is kept fresh. Everyone had a brilliant time with the children really excitied about the trip. As well as each child wearing the new Stepney Hi-Vis tabbards we have bought for the whole school, they wore special Tesco hats around the store.

This Week's Ethos Theme !

In our assemblies and each school day this week our theme is:
“I can feel positive, even when things go wrong ”

Multicultural Celebrations !

One of the strengths of Stepney is that we are a multicultural school and we think about other people's religions, customs, cultures and beliefs:
This week, people around the world are celebrating…
25th May
Miraj-un Nabi: ‘Night of Ascent’ when the Prophet was taken to heaven in a vision and given divine knowledge.

16.5.14
A GOOD Result !

We are delighted to announce that the school has been judged to be GOOD  by Ofsted. The report has been published today and is available to view in full on our website and will be soon on the official Ofsted website, as well as copies being sent home. There are four grades that schools can get: 1 Outstanding, 2 Good, 3 Requires Improvement and 4 Inadequate. Regrettably, with increasingly tougher demands being constantly imposed by the government, there are many schools who are slipping into the last two categories. Both of these result in close monitoring by HMI (Her Majesty’s Inspectors). Schools that are Outstanding or Good are not inspected for another three-four years.  Given the stricter criteria, we are extremely pleased with our result but we are certainly not complacent. We will be working hard towards getting an Outstanding in future inspections. Today’s published result reflects all the hard work that is done by a strong Stepney team—that is a team comprising pupils, parents and staff. Please click here to see the latest report or go to the dedicated page to look at our three most recent reports.

Year 6 SATs End !

After a week of stress and hard toil, our year 6 pupils have finished their SATs. All of these pupils undertook level 3-5 papers in Reading, Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling and Mathematics plus a further group of seven took level 6 papers in these subjects. (Level 4 is the expected grade for pupils in year 6, level 5 corresponds with year 8 and level 6 with with year 10). As always, our oldest pupils have been working relentlessly since the start of September to prepare for these tests. There is no doubt that they all put 100% in for this and did the best they possibly could. All the papers have been sent away to external markers and we will receive them in July. Writing and Science results are based on our own Teachers‘ Assessments. These are moderated to ensure accuracy. We would like to say a big thank you to pupils, parents and staff for another combined team effort in the run up to the exams this year. Today, the pupils took the second of the maths Level 5-6 papers and seven pupils took the two level 6 maths papers (it was quite a mathematical day for them!).

Beans !
The School Council have requested to have scrambled egg or beans on the menu at breakfast club in the morning. After consultation with St. Charles' Primary School kitchens, who provide our breakfasts and lunches, we will be offering beans on toast next Wednesday as a trial event. We will not be able to offer scrambled egg for various reasons but will see what the response is to the beans. Other options will still be available.

Everybody did really well because some of the players had not played before but they all worked as a team to help each other. Both teams finished runners up in their groups with Stepney 1 winning three games and losing one, while Stepney 2 won two, drew one and lost one. Well done to all who took part.

Hull City's Cup Final Mascot !
We are delighted to announce that one of our year 2 pupils has been chosen to be mascot of the day for Hull City when they walk out at Wembley Stadium for the FA Cup final. Freddie, in Miss Laybourne's class has been chosen by manager Steve Bruce to undertake this honour. Needless to say, everyone at Stepney will be supporting Freddie. It's an incredible honour in this historic event for the club.

Bee Keepers in Foundation Stage !
Mr Chris Coulson and his two associates visited our Foundation Stage to tell our nursery and reception pupils all about bees and beekeeping. They showed the pupils the protective clothing they wear and had some child-sized ones for some pupils to try on. There were no real bees but they had a mock-up hive. We learned many interesting facts including how many bees you would expect to find in a bee-hive - about 25 000; roughly equal to the number of people who will fill the KC stadium! Needless to say, our youngest pupils were buzzing!

SATs Begin !
Our year 6 pupils started their SATs exams today. This morning, it was the reading comprehension paper for all pupils. This year, there is a new format to this paper. In previous years, level 3, 4 & 5 questions were intermingled. The new style paper is divided into three sections, starting with level 3 and ending with level 5. This afternoon, seven of our pupils took the level 6 reading test as well. This was particularly challenging. Both in the morning and afternoon sessions, pupils worked really hard, each one of them making a great effort. These papers will now be sent away to be marked by an external examiner.
Tomorrow, pupils will be taking their Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling exams.

This Week's Ethos Theme !
In our assemblies and each school day this week our theme is:
“I can stand up for what I think after listening to others.”

Attendance & Punctuality Awards !

When we had our Ofsted Inspection last week, the lead inspector emphasised the importance that HMI (Her Majesty's Inspectors) place on attendance because, as he said "if pupils are not in school, they are not learning." He praised the work we have done this year to improve our attendance but it is an area that we all have got to continue working at. In assembly on Thursday, we gave out certificates to all the pupils had 100% attendance in the spring term as well as certificates for those who were 'never late' for school. Once again, our thanks go to Mrs Purkins (Attendance Officer) and Miss England (Attendance Assistant) for all their hard work in this area of the school.
These were the results:

100% Attendance
Reception: 2 pupils (6%)
Year 1: 5 (17%)

Bradford Visit !
Our phase 2/3 classes visited the National Media Musuem in Bradford this week. Ahmad & Karolina have both written reports from the day and here are some excerpts:
"When we got to the museum, it was really exciting. The first thing we did was to learn the names of people that make the programmes, who are called the director, producer and the script writer. Then we went to a studio and learned how a TV programme is made."  Ahmad
"After that, we went to the Imax. Everyone was excited. We were going to wear 3D glasses. When the film started, it looked like you coud see the objects and things going through you. It looked like you could touch them. When it finished, I got my glasses off. I was really amazed."  Karolina
The pupils also had the opportunity to use the blue screen technology so they could pretend to be TV stars and newsreaders. They also enjoyed looking at the displays tracing the development of TV and media through the ages.
Needless to say, staff reported back that everyone was well behaved and had had a thoroughly interesting and enjoyable day.

Ofsted Inspection Now Over !
A Message to Parents and Carers

"During this last week, we have had an Ofsted Inspection. For everyone at our school, it has been a stressful and intense few days.  We would like to share the results of the inspection with you but, until the Ofsted report is published in a few weeks time, no details can be given away. Ofsted have strict quality-assurance procedures, which their staff have to follow. The report will be written over the next few days by the lead inspector then this will go through a series of checks by other staff.

I will get to look at the report to check for any inaccuracies and then it will go back to be checked again before publication. During this time, we are not permitted to divulge any of its contents.

On a personal level, I would like to express my sincere thanks to everyone concerned. The staff, pupils and governors worked extremely hard and have shown the school at its best. We have all been brilliantly supported by parents and carers. This is greatly appreciated. Your kind words have been taken on board. Your children have been a credit to you. Their behaviour has been exemplary this week. It is always good in our school, but this week they have outshone themselves. Thanks for making sure they have come to school with the right attitude.

Of course, we still have important work in front of us, including SATs in a week or so and I can guarantee that just because we have had an inspection, this doesn’t mean there will be any let-up on behalf of our staff for the education and well-being of your children. The motto of Stepney is that ‘We are a small school with great expectations.’
This will never change!

Paul Browning
Head Teacher."

May Day !
Please may we remind you that the school will be closed on Monday 5th May for the national May Day holiday. We will reopen on Tuesday 6th May.

Bradford Visit !
Our two phase 2/3 classes will be visiting the Bradford Film museum on Tuesday 6th May as part of their work on inventions. Pupils need to be at school at 8.15am as the buses will be leaving shortly after that. If they arrive for normal school opening time, it is likely that they will miss the bus! Letters have already gone out but please may we remind parents that pupils shouldn’t bring money with them.

New Telephone System !
We have finally got a new telephone system in school. This has allowed us to have more lines in school so there shouldn’t be as many engaged tones.
