Key Stage 2 Sports Days !
Our last afternoon of sports saw years 4, 5 and 6. Similar to the other days, this was another triumph. Luckily, the sports afternoons fell on the best days of weather this week. It is always a lottery guessing where we might have the good weather! It was clear from the smiles on pupils’ faces that they thoroughly enjoyed the event and it made a welcome break from classroom-based learning! Many thanks go to everyone who participated, helped out or watched but special thanks go to Miss Northen for the tremendous time and effort that she spent sorting out all the arrangements.

25.6.14
Key Stage 1 Sports Days !
This afternoon saw the sports events for years 1, 2 & 3. Once again, We had lovely weather and a great turnout from friends and relatives. Miss Northen had organised a carousel of activities before the traditional races. It was another successful afternoon.

24.6.14
Stepney Triumphs at Dance Fest!
Miss Middleton has been putting our Stepney Dance Troupe through their paces this term in preparation for today's competition. The pupils were absolutely brilliant and looked great in their specially designed T-shirts. For the second year running, Stepney won the trophy seeing off rivals Clifton, Collingwood and Pearson Primaries.

This week, people around the world are celebrating…
24th June
St John's Day:  Feast of St John the Baptist, who foretold the coming of Jesus
28th June
Ramadan begins

Year 6 Kid Alert !
Today, our year 6 pupils travelled to the KC Lightstream Stadium, home of Hull Kingston Rovers, today. This was part of the annual Kid Alert event, that we always attend. Pupils have the chance to look around different stands and see various presentations from agencies and services such as the Police, Fire Brigade etc. As always, our pupils thoroughly enjoyed the day and learned a great deal more about the vital roles that these people undertake.

Changes to Phase 4/5 Exhibition !
Please note that due to Sports Day, we have had to change the date of the 4/5 exhibition, which will now take place during the week commencing 30th June 2014. We are planning more of our successful craft afternoons instead of the traditional exhibition.

Oakwood Dog Rescue !
In assembly this morning, Carol and Kerry came to talk to all the pupils about the work they do at Oakwood to rehome dogs who have been abandoned. They showed us photos of some of the dogs in their care and Kerry had brought along 'Shadow', a soft toy dog to demonstrate the best way to approach an unfamiliar dog. A few volunteers eagerly came up to follow suit. Carol also showed us how to lift and carry a dog correctly. This year, we have sent donations to the centre. Mrs Smith and Mrs Crichton have arranged this They also introduced a new competition, involving a drawing assignment for the younger pupils and a poetry writing one for the rest of the schools. This will be in combination with sending donations of dog food, dog treats and doy toys to the centre.

David Bunting's Animated Films !
A few years ago we had the animator, David Bunting working with us in the school. We had produced some wonderful films as part of this project. Mr Cameron came across the DVD with these on the other day so we have now transferred these onto our kidblog site. Please feel free to look at these and add your comments. Click here to access these on the kidblog site. The Wilberforce film was used as part of the bicentenary celebrations that we had in Hull and there was another film by Miss Atkinson's year 2 class at the time, entitled 'Jack & the Beanstalk'. This was shown at the Hiroshima Children's Film Festival in Japan.

18.6.14
Year 2 SATs and Phonics tests are Over !
Miss Baitson, Mr Ingram and Miss Laybourne have been delighted with their year 2 pupils, who have been sitting their SATs exams this week. They did really well and the results look like they are going to be a huge improvement on last year. Similarly, Mr Cameron had been undertaking the phonics screening tests with year 1 and some pupils in year 2, who missed them last year. Both of these sets of tests, combined with the year 6 SATs provide the figures that all schools are judged on.

Mr Browning helps Hull University's Ofsted Inspection !
Our head teacher joined a small group of other heads from Hull and the East Riding primary schools at Hull University today. The university's education department, which trains student teachers, was being inspected Ofsted. Mr Browning was eager to tell inspectors about the close links we have with them and the brilliant work that Miss Atkinson and Miss Baitson do, when they lead the teaching of phonics to the students. Every autumn, we have all ninety of the PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) students working in school. Miss Atkinson gives them lectures on how we teach phonics before the students join the phonics sessions with our pupils, which are led by our staff. Miss Atkinson and Miss Baitson then go to the university and present lectures there as well. The lead inspector was particularly impressed with this partnership work.

The Latest Sloggers' Results !
With both Mr Browning and Mr Ingram being sidelined through injuries (muscle pulls and factured fingers respectively), Miss Baitson and Miss England joined the fray last night. Mr Rookyard was back in the team and the results were as follows: The team last the first two matches (the second narrowly) and won the third. It was another determined team performance. As well as being competitive, the Sloggers still maintained the primary aim, which was to have fun. We have a strong staff team at Stepney and the Sloggers is yet another example of the excellent spirit that exists.

17.6.14
Change to Sports' Afternoon Date !
Our sincere apologies for this but we've had to change one of our sports' afternoon dates for next week. Instead of being on Tuesday, the sports for years 1, 2 & 3 will now take place on Wednesday 25th June. Here is an up-to-date list:

Sports' Afternoons
June 2014
- EYFS— Mon 23rd 1.30pm onwards
- Yr 1, 2 & 3—Weds 25th 1.30pm onwards
- Yr 4, 5 & 6– Thurs 26th 1.30pm onwards

Singing at the City Hall !
Mrs Rice and her seventeen-strong choir represented our school at the Hull City Hall for a brilliant event with dozens of other schools. The hall was packed with school children who practised all morning and then performed in the afternoon for friends and relatives. Songs included: 'Junkanoo/Old Bill Jones', 'O how peaceful living in the country', 'First you make your fingers click', 'Ticking Clocks', 'Kite flying high', 'I like the flowers', 'Come and dance with me', 'Hey, my name is Joe', 'Sing with joy', 'Si si si, Bear Hunt', 'Wonderful World'. Lawrence Rudd, the Musical Director at the event, had also written a little musical about Noah's Ark, which included songs such as “Noah's Flood” and “Wonderful World”. All the girls sang their hearts, and Mr Browning, who attended the afternoon concert, agreed that they were wonderful as ever.

16.6.14
This Week's Ethos Theme !
In our assemblies and each school day this week our theme is:
“I can tell you some of the things that have changed in my life”

13.6.14
A Double Fire Service Day !
This morning the Fire Brigade arrived to show our Foundation Stage one of their engines and to tell the children all about what it is like to be a fire brigade officer then this afternoon, our phase 4/5 pupils had a talk about fire safety around the home from the service. Both of these are annual events for us and it is obviously really important for the pupils to learn about this. Our thanks go to Humberside Fire Brigade for their wonderful presentations today.

World Cup Fever !
We all had a great day celebrating the start of the World Cup with staff and pupils wearing football kits. Together with the hall being appropriately decorated with bunting and flags, it was a super atmosphere.

Year 6 at the Shine Event at York University !
Our year 6 pupils went to York University for the second year running today. This was for a 'Shine' event which shows pupils what it is like to go away to study at University. Once again, it proved to be a really stimulating experience for them. Although we have a brilliant university in Hull, it was useful to show pupils that they can make choices about where to study outside of their home environment and to give them a sense of opportunities and choices they might be able to make in the future.

12.6.14
Kwik Cricket Results !
We had tournaments at both Pearson Primary and at Stepney this afternoon. Stepney lost at Pearson but at Stepney it was a draw between all three schools who were competing.

11.6.14
The Sloggers Stamp their Mark !
Despite not having the services of Mr Rookyard tonight, and Mr Browning being injured through pulled muscles during the first match, the 'Stepney Sloggers' staff rounders team went on to beat three other teams in the first night of the summer rounders' league. Disappointingly, there weren't as many teams as last year but, nevertheless, this is a good start for the team, putting them in top place above a team called the 'Leggy Ladies'! All the team played well with some superb batting performances from the ladies: Miss Cable, Miss Hatfield, Miss Laybourne and Miss Northen. Mr Darwood, Mr Dear and Mr Ingram were whacking the ball around the park as well. Well done to the team!

The New Indoor Kit Finally Arrives !
After months of waiting, the new Stepney kit for indoor tournaments came today. Following on from having a new football kit several years ago, we decided that our other teams needed a kit. Mainly for indoor tournaments, such as basketball and benchball, it will also be used for the likes of netball and rounders. Tomorrow afternoon at the kwik cricket tournament, the new tops will be used for the first time. These will be worn with the school's red PE shorts. It is imperative that all pupils come to school with the PE kit of plain white T shirt and red shorts. We still have a small minority who come with another kit. This is not acceptable. Everyone needs to be dressed the same for PE.

This afternoon, it was the turn of class 4/5a to repeat the visit that their peers made yesterday. The weather was certainly glorious!

Jakki, our school nurse, accompanied by two of her colleagues were working in year 6 this morning. As part of our curriculum and agreed policy on Health, Social and Personal Education she spoke to these pupils about Sex and Relationships Education. She covered Growing Up, Conception and Birth. Year 4 Swimming !
This morning marked the beginning of the year 4 swimming lessons for this year. Everyone got off to a great start today.

Year 6, Prison Me No Way !
Every year, we have this stimulating and thought-provoking experience for our eldest pupils. We have three afternoon sessions this week, where elements of the prison and judiciary system are explained to pupils. Today saw the pupils engaged with the first of the sessions.

Changes to Stepney's Got Talent !
We are fast approaching our annual ‘Stepney’s Got Talent’ competition. Owing to timetabling issues, and pupils busy doing other events we are having to reschedule the heats for this competition. The following dates are now:
Tuesday 24th June – Auditions from 1.45pm
Friday 27th June – Semi-finals from 1.45pm
Friday 4th July – The Final from 2pm
Our apologies for this late change in dates.

World Cup Football Fever Friday !
This Friday (13th June) we are encouraging pupils to come to school in a football kit (or PE kit if they haven’t a football kit). There is no charge for this. We are not using it to raise money for charity but rather celebrating the start of the Fifa World Cup in Brazil. We do hope that as many people (staff and pupils) as possible will participate to make this a colourful event. We’ve even got some special bunting to put up in the hall.

This Week's Ethos Theme !
In our assemblies and each school day this week our theme is:
“I know that change can be scary ”

Multicultural Celebrations !

One of the strengths of Stepney is that we are a multicultural school and we think about other people's religions, customs, cultures and beliefs:
This week, people around the world are celebrating…

Year 4 Swimming Lessons !
Next Monday, our year 4 pupils will be starting their swimming lessons. They will be travelling to and from Albert Avenue Pools by coach. These will continue every morning until Friday 20th June 2014. Swimming lessons will be for 45  minutes per day. The coach will be leaving Stepney Primary at 9am prompt and will return back to school for 11am. Every in year 4 needs to bring a separate bag to keep their swimming kit in, which needs to consist of a towel and a bathing costume or trunks (NOT Bermuda shorts). If a pupil needs to wear swimming goggles, they must be of the safety type (hardened plastic lens and NO snorkelling/full face goggles). Any pupils who need to have inhalers must have them with them. Parents should have received a letter and returned the permission slip. If you haven't, then please see the office staff for one.

Swimming at Albert Avenue !
It always seems a little strange that we have to go by coach to another pool, when we are next door to one. We, and other neighouring schools, have campaigned for years to have lessons at Beverley Road Baths but have got nowhere with this. We have been told it is due to Beverley Road only having one large pool and not a smaller one, which is suitable for primary children, as well as the swimming coaches being based elsewhere.

International Pupil Council Meeting !
Mr Browning, together with Lottie and Moshin from year 6 attended another IPC meeting this afternoon. It was a really useful meeting, sharing ideas with pupils from other schools. However, the main event of the afternoon didn't take place. We had hoped to talk to colleague IPC pupils in the Hastings region of England by 'skyping' them. Unfortunately, internet connection problems in Hastings resulted in us not being able to do this. We'll try again another time!

Class 2/3a Liya & Sarah
Class 2/3b Ellis & Franek
Phase 4/5 Adam, Andrew, Hollie & Sebastian

3.6.14
LA Moderation Success !
This afternoon, we have had staff working on behalf of the Local Authority in school, scrutinising some of our work. One of the statutory duties of any Local Authority is to monitor and moderate work the schools do. Last year, they came into look at the judgements that our year 2 staff make. As this is one of the year groups that take SATs, the LA has to ensure that the grades that we assess pupils on are accurate and correct. The phase 2/3 team received generous and well-deserved praise for this. This year, we were informed that our year 6 team would be monitored. As there is no longer a writing test in the SATs exams, our teachers assess the pupils and send these figures to the Department for Education (DfE). It is important that an external body verifies that these assessments are a true reflection of the pupils' work. Once again, the LA were extremely pleased with the judgements, the range of evidence and the quality of both pupils' work and teachers' marking and grading. It has been a trying few months for our year 6 staff, with Ofsted, SATs and this moderation and they have come through it all with flying colours. Mrs Brocklebank, Miss Pattrick, Mrs Phelps-Jones, Mrs Wilde, ably assisted by Mrs Rodgers and Mrs Smith have certainly proven they are strong team. Well done to them and, of course, the pupils.

This morning, Mr Darwood took seventeen of our phase 4/5 pupils to Costello Athletics stadium to take part in an interschools competition. Working in mixed school groups, they competed in sprint and longer distance running races, standing long jumps and throwing events.
