Stepney Stars Dance Troupe in Action !

Our specialist dance and gymnastics coach, Sarah Middleton, has been working with a group of pupils to perfect a dance routine which they have then performed at Collingwood Primary School today. Three schools took part, with Pearson being the other one. After a startling performance, our dancers came in second. Everyone remarked on how they had done and the great team spirit they showed. They have decided to show their routine at the beginning of the 'Stepney's Got Talent' final, next Monday afternoon.

Last of the Swimming Lessons !
Our year 4 pupils had their final swimming session today at Ennerdale Leisure Centre. Over the last few weeks, they have been going each day and practising their swimming under the guidance and tutoring of the coaches. All of our pupils have progressed, whether they were proficient to start with or beginners. Everyone is now more confident in the water. We just hope they will be able to carry on and develop even more.

Going Green with Asda !

This year, our phase 4/5 classes have been involved in a project with the new Asda store along Beverley Road. They have been growing plants in a green challenge. Along with children in other local schools, we have featured on the store's website. Please click here to see the relevant web page or go to http://greenroom.asda.com/hull-beverley-road (once you have gone to the page, you will need to scroll down)

Once again, Miss Northen was in charge and doing a splendid job. Many thanks to all the parents and carers who were there to support us. A truly successful event!

Time Alteration for Sports !
We have changed the timing for the start of the sports afternoons from 2pm to 1.15pm to allow us to squeeze all the events in. Tomorrow, it will be the turn of years 1, 2 & 3. On Thursday, it will be years 4, 5 & 6. Apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Foundation Stage Sports !
Our Nursery and Reception children enjoyed a break in the wet weather to have a brilliant sports day. First, groups of children circulated around a series of nine different events, which staff had organised. Then they partipated in various races, much to the delight of all the parents. The whole week of events has been organised and led by Miss Northen, our PE coordinator, who has done a wonderful job! She even ordered the sunshine!

Withernsea High Help Out !

A year ago, Withernsea High School put on a production about 'Troy' and they have offered to lend us many of the costumes they used. Our year 6s can now wear them in their own forthcoming production, 'Troy Story', to be held on 11th and 12th July. Thanks to Mrs Heidstra for going to get them today.

Summer Fayre Donations
We always have a great summer fayre and this year’s is fast approaching. To ensure it is a success, we do rely on the generosity of people to donate items for our various stalls. Please will you send in any donations you may be willing to give. We need bottles of wine, juice etc and items (new or unused) for the tombola and pink and /or chocolate gifts. The actual fayre is on Thursday 5th July.

Troy Story !
The framework for a wooden horse (made from cardboard in this case!) is being assembled in the year 6 classrooms. This is in preparation for the end of year production by our oldest pupils. The evening performance will take place on Wednesday 11th July, with a morning performance on Thursday 12th July. The latter will be combined with the special leavers’ assembly for our oldest pupils. Year 6 have their last day with us on the 13th July before going to their new schools for the last week of term. The rest of our school breaks up for the summer on Friday 20th July.

Dance Off !

Our PE coordinator, Miss Northen, is pleased to announce that the dance club are competing in a special dance festival next week on Wednesday 25th June at the Northern Academy of Performing Arts on Anlaby Road. Our pupils have been coached by the multi-talented Sarah Middleton, who has been teaching dance and gymnastics for the last year or two throughout the school. It starts at 10am and finishes at approximately 1pm. Parents/carers are welcome to attend.

Weather Permitting, we will be holding our summer sports days next week. On Monday, it will be the turn of our Foundation Stage children. This will  be in the morning, beginning at 9.30am. On Tuesday, our year 1, 2 and 3 children will be taking to the field at 2pm then our year 4,5 & 6 pupils will be having their’s on Thursday at 2pm. Should the rain spoil the show, we will postpone it to another time and keep you informed. Fingers crossed for next week!

Stepney’s Got Talent Show
Hotting Up!
Today, we have had the semi-final of the Stepney’s Got Talent show. Once again, we have been amazed by the hidden talents of the pupils. Although, it’s always a very difficult decision, our judges have narrowed the field down to the final lineout, who will compete for a brand new trophy on Monday 2nd July. This will commence at 2pm.

Junior Paramedics !
Last week, it was a group of fire service vehicles turning up at school and this week it was an ambulance. The neighbours may have been forgiven that the school was having a series of emergenices. Fortunately, that has not been the case. Last week, the fire officers came to show our Foundation Stage children the engines. Today, two paramedics came to work with phase 4/5 on basic first aid skills. They even had the opportunity to practise resuscitating a 'dummy' in the back of the ambulance and using the equipment in there.

An Assembly for an Historic Event !

Over the years, we have celebrated and witnessed remarkable events in Hull. Our pupils were interviewed when Hull City gained promotion to the premiership and witnessed the celebrations. Today, Mr Browning's assembly focussed on the Olympic Torch relay that was taking place in the city. Apart from London, it was the longest city circuit in the whole 70 day Torch tour. Many of our pupils went to see the Torch coming through the city! Another truly memorable day in our history!

Endeavour Workshops !
Year 6 are not joining us for the Friday afternoon award assemblies for the next few weeks as they are spending the time at Endeavour school in their Design and Technology workshops. Today, they started making wooden cars and baking bread. Everyone enjoyed the experience of using the high school's facilities.

Attendance Figures !
Our attendance figures for this week are:
Reception: 93.4%
Class 1: 95.7%
Class 2/3A: 98.6%*
Class 2/3B: 91.4%
Class 4/5A: 96%

Dinner Money Reminder !
Please may we remind you that dinner money must be handed in on Mondays, not any other day of the week.

Summer Fayre Donations
Our summer fayre is fast approaching.  Please will you send in any donations you may be willing to give. We need bottles of wine, juice etc and items (new or unused) for the tombola and pink and /or chocolate gifts.

Kid Alert !
Our year 6 pupils went on their annual visit to the 'Kid's Alert event' which is a chance for them to see how the different emergency services operate. As usual it was well organised and the pupils enjoyed finding out lots of interesting facts, figures and information.

Ordering School Photographs !
The school photo sample copies have now gone out to parents/carers. It says on the packs that money was to be paid by this Tuesday. Clearly, this is impossible. The company are still asking for a short turn around on orders though: they must be paid for by Friday 22nd June.Unlike previous years, they will not be doing a second order so this is the final deadline. Next year’s photograph day is Wednesday, 23rd October 2013.

Street Dancing !
Phase 4/5 got down to some groovy street dancing routines this afternoon as year 10 students and their teacher, Imogen Glazer, from Endeavour School took them through their paces. This is part of a sports challenge programme, sponsored by Sky Sports. As part of this, the high school students have an Olympic mentor, namely Jenna Downing, who is a professional inline skater and sports ambassador in the UK. There were some pretty slick routines being put together in our hall!

Refugee Awareness !
Sally Webster came into speak to years 1, 2 and 3 about refugees from around the world and some of the things they have to cope with and hardships they endure. As a school that has taken in refugees from different parts of Africa as part of a programme called 'Gateway', it was particularly poignant!

Sex Education !
Every year, at the this time in the term, the school nurses come into school to give sex education lessons to our year 6s. These are mainly about the changes that they will expect as they start puberty and how they can look after their bodies. This morning, the year 6s had a really interesting information lesson from the medical staff.

Year 4 Swimming Starts !
Our year 4 children got off to a brilliant start with their swimming lessons. They go to Ennerdale for their lessons. As usual, we have quite a number of children who can't swim but we find these few weeks really help to develop their confidence and basic techniques.

Rainbow Writing Winners !
This week's winners are:
Year 1—Denver & Connor
Class 2/3a-Jessica & Kerry
Class 2/3b-Daniel & Michael
Class 4/5a-Georgijs & Charlotte
Class 4/5b-Hilal & Karolina
Class 6a-David & Kian
Class 6b–Jack & Dominik

Welcome Back & Timetable Alterations !
We hope everyone has had a good half term break. Although, there are only six weeks left before the end of the school year, there are many different activities taking place. One slight alteration has been made to the timing of the 'Stepney's Got Talent' events. Instead of the final being held on Friday 29th June, we have moved this to 2pm on Monday 2nd July so that it doesn't clash with the year 4 swimming lessons.
Also, the EYFS/Year 1 exhibition that was planned for Thursday 21st June has now been rescheduled to 9am on Monday 2nd July. This is because next week, year 1 pupils are having to undertake the new Phonics Screening Tests that the government have introduced for all year 1 children throughout the country. Our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.

Year 4 Swimming Tomorrow !
A reminder to year 4 parents/carers. The children will be starting several weeks of daily swimming lessons tomorrow. They will need trunks and towels every day and must be at school on time. The coach leaves school at 9am !

The Fire Brigade Arrive !
A fire engine and a support vehicle arrived at school today, but not for an emergency. They were visiting our Foundation Stage children. Needless to say, the children were highly excited to be given the chance to climb in the fire engine. Fire Officers also took them through their paces: they taught the pupils what to do if their clothes were to catch on fire. They practised dropping and rolling. A great morning was had by everyone!

Year 6 & Phase 4/5 practise their first aid !
Sally Webster visited school today to help our oldest three year groups with basic first aid. Entitled 'Everyday First Aid' the pupils practised putting their friends into the recovery position as well as other very helpful techniques.

While the rest of us have been enjoying the half term holiday, contractors have been replacing some of the stair edging with bright yellow strips, which hopefully won't keep coming loose like the old ones and will certainly stand out more. Our ICT technicians from Primary Technology have also been replacing the wireless routers. We have had problems with the old ones for the last couple of years. With the introduction of our 'Bug Club' online reading books the old routers were not coping well. Fingers crossed!

ICT Course
We have received details of a five week ICT course for parents, grandparents and carers starting on Thursday 14th June, between 9.30am and 11.30am. Please click here for further details.
