Attendance Figures Back On Course  !

Once again, we have had another better week with attendance. Infact, we've gone from having the worst week of the school year a few weeks ago to the best one. Every phase group had 97% or above. We are grateful for the efforts that parents/carers are making to get their children to school. It gives them continuity in the classroom and really helps their learning.
Please click here to see the line graph which shows the attendance patterns.

Many thanks to everyone who has attended our consultation days so far. Although, there is only one left tomorrow, which is for Miss Johnson in the Nursery class, you may still see teachers if you wish on other occasions. Please contact your child's teacher on the playground or via the school office. Some teachers have had parents who have not turned up to their appointment. It is not too late to come and see us.

Environmental Conference
 !
Mrs Smith led a group of year 6 pupils to Beverley this morning as they attended the annual environmental conference. During the morning, they listened to a brilliant and inspiring talk about the rainforest and the problems that are facing our planet. In the afternoon, pupils from the different school were divided into 'interest' groups and had to debate the arguments to and for a 'new motorway route through a rainforest region'. Some pupils had to be environmentalists, others the road builders, native population, politicians etc. The pupils returned to school beaming with enthusiasm and excitement about the day's events.

Five-A-Side Football Tournament at KC  !
A great time was had by all tonight even though we unfortunately lost all four of our matches. This was the very first time children in years 3 and 4 have had the chance to compete in a tournament outside of school and we're sure it will prove to have been a valuable experience for them as, judging by last night, we have some very exciting young footballers on our hands.
Full credit goes to the players as they arrived and left with smiles on their faces despite coming up against some very good teams. We're looking forward to hopefully competing in more competitions within this age range again in the not-too-distant future.

Netball Youth Camps !
We have been asked to put the following advertisement on our website. We think it is definitely an exciting new development.
"Can you please promote the attached England Netball Youth Camps to your friends, family and colleagues. Any help promoting these camps would be much appreciated.
Many thanks

Miss Baitson's Latest Developments on Kidblog  !
Miss Baitson is leading the way in developing our kidblog work. This morning, she put up a new post for her year 4 pupils. This was called 'Inspirational Write' and challenged the pupils to choose a story opening and write the follow up from this. Always wanting to innovate, Miss Baitson has then marked all the work according to our school marking policy of SHIPs, which stands for Sense, Handwriting, Interesting words & phrases, Punctuation and Spelling. Anyone is allowed to go on this site, read both the pupils' work and the teacher comments and then post comments themselves.
May we remind you that we take e-safety extremely seriously at Stepney. Every post and comment that finds its way onto this site is checked by staff, and pupils' full names are never revealed.
As well as Miss Baitson, other teachers and pupils continue to add to the site with brilliant posts and comments as well. Mr Ingram also put up a post, asking pupils to write about their recent visit to the Street Life museum.

Mrs Walton in the Library with Dewey  !
We welcomed back Mrs Walton from the Hull Schools Library Service. She has been in school during the past couple of months to completely 'weed' and reclassify our library books. We now have the 'Dewey Decimal Classification' system in operation. Today, the library service staff worked with the year 1-4 classes on how to find books they wanted in a library using 'Dewey' as well as hearing the odd story or two. It was a really interesting day and our thanks go to Mrs Walton.

Cycle Coding Sessions
 !
We are delighted by the number of pupils who come to school on their bicycles and scooters. Unfortunately, the theft of bicycles in Hull, is on the increase. In order to help with the ongoing police campaign to deal with this crime, it is recommended that bicycles are coded. On Wednesday 4th & 11th February, our local PCSO's will be on the back playground at hometime to put codes on pupils' bicycles. If you wish your child to have his/her cycle coded, please ensure they have them in school on one of these days. Please click here to see a copy of the poster.

Parents'/Carers' Consultation Days !

After a poor week in which every year group had been affected by a sickness bug, we have had a better week with attendance rising again. We completely understand if pupils are genuinely sick but please will you make every effort for your child to attend school if s/he can. May we remind you that if they have a medical appointment at some point in the day, they shouldn't be having the whole day off.

Renovating Beverley Road !
Hull City Council’s Major Projects Team are inviting members of the public to some events over the next couple of weeks, to share views on some proposed funding for the
regeneration of Beverley Road. Hull City Council has put in an application for a grant from The Townscape
Heritage Initiative- a Heritage Lottery Fund project. This helps communities regenerate deprived towns and cities across the UK, by improving historic buildings within an area. It aims to reverse the decline of historic townscapes by repairing buildings and bringing them back to life. It also inspires communities to find out more about their townscape heritage and give local people the chance to learn new skills. This can be achieved by running events and educational or community-led activities. If successful, the proposed funding will be used to regenerate the city end of Beverley Road, from Queens Road up to the Hull Daily Mail building.

Hull City Council are arranging some events so that those who are
interested in the project can come and learn more about the proposed funding allocation, and share their views and ideas. We have been asked to pass on this invitation to our school community. The following events are taking place:
Thursday 29th January
Kingston Youth Centre 4pm-6.30pm
Saturday 31st January *
Beverley Road Baths 11am-2.30pm
Tuesday 3rd February*
Stepney Primary School 3.30-6pm
*A Polish translator will be available at these events
If you cannot make an open event but would still like to have your say, please contact
beverleyroadheritage@hullcc.gov.uk or 01482 318227

Stepney Girls Football Match  !

Tonight, Mr Dear and Mr Ingram took the girls football team to a tournament at the KC arena. Mr Ingram reported that "The girls won their first match tonight 1-0 then lost their last two games 3-0 and 2-0. They absolutely loved it though and it was a great experience for them. Mr Dear is going to continue to do some football specifically for the girls on a lunch time and we're going to look at organising some more 'girls only' matches within the cluster. I think the fact that this was a girls only competition really encouraged the girls to get involved as Morgan is the only one to have played in previous matches with the football club."

Basic Skills Review  !
This morning, we had an interim basic skills review. Mrs Simpson from Wheeler Primary School looked through the evidence that Miss Atkinson had gathered together with the assistance of the other staff. Mrs Simpson will prepare a report but did comment that she was impressed by both the paper work and with the basic skills teaching around the school.

Attendance Figures Hit By Sickness Bug !
In terms of attendance, this week has been our poorest one for a long time! Every year group has been affected by a sickness bug, which has resulted in figures plummeting. We hope that this will improve next week. We completely understand if pupils are genuinely sick but please will you make every effort for your child to attend school if s/he can. May we remind you that if they have a medical appointment at some point in the day, they shouldn't be having the whole day off.

Tempus Fugit!
Our year 5 and 6 pupils were treated to an entertaining and informative start to their thematic unit on Greeks. Tempus Fugit (which is latin meaning 'Time Flies') is a one-woman show about Greek myths and gods. It proved to be an exhilarating trip, weaving in the histories of four myths and various gods. Pupils were involved from the start, dressing up in costumes and taking on key rolls.

There were laughs a plenty, especially as many of the characters had to marry one another! In between the entertainment side of the production was a definite learning experience. Miss Atkinson did remark, jokingly, that a trip to Greece itself would have been a better introduction to the unit, but the school budget doesn't stretch that far. A wonderful afternoon!

Last Day of Mock SATs !
Today marked the last day of the present set of mock SATs for our year 6s. Paper B of their maths test proved to be another challenging one for out oldest pupils but they all certainly gave their best efforts.

No Dogs On Site !
Please may we remind all parents and carers that no dogs are allowed on the school site unless they are guidance dogs. In the past, we have had some
pupils being frightened by dogs and also mess left by them. In the interests of health, safety and welfare of everyone, dogs should not be brought in through any of the gates.

14.1.15
Phase 3-4 WWII Street Life Experience!
Our year 3 and 4 pupils braved the cold weather to walk down to the Street Life museum in Hull today. During the morning, the year 3 pupils experienced being evacuated by having labels and going on a bus (in the confines of the museum). Then they explored rationing by sorting food. They had to decide which food would have been available during WWII and which wouldn't. Everyone found it really interesting. They then returned to school and year 4 walked down in the afternoon for the same activities. It was a stimulating and absorbing introduction to their spring term thematic unit on WWII.

Year 6 Mathematicians!
Today was the first day of the mock SATs maths papers. As usual, everyone gave it their best go. Paper B is tomorrow!

Rainbow Writing Winners !

12.1.15
Special PE Event
!
Mr Darwood and Mr Dear took a group of pupils to a PE event with a difference. This was to take part in a game that is usually played by people with special needs. 'Boccia' is a Paralympic sport for athletes with disabilities that have a major impact on motor skills. It is a target ball sport belonging to the same family as petanque and bowls. However, today's event was for able bodied and disabled children. The pupils learned how to play the game and both of our two teams gave their very best. Many of them were actually competing in an after-school sporting tournament for the first time and they managed creditable 4th and 7th place finishes out of 9 competing teams. Most importantly, the pupils had great fun and really enjoyed it. Our PE coaches reported that it was a great atmosphere.

Mighty Maths Winners !
This week's winners are:
Phase 1/2 - Isabella & Sofia
Phase 3/4 - Al-Horr, Franek & Mahdiyah
Phase 5/6 - Lewis & Sadam

Year 6 MOCK SATs !
Our oldest pupils started their mock SATs this week, beginning with their reading test this morning.

9.1.15
Music Assembly
!
We are delighted with the impact that Mrs Rice has had on our school music provision over the last few years. Her expertise and enthusiasm has substantially raised the profile of music. This afternoon, we had a special assembly to celebrate work that pupils had done during the autumn. Owing to the many Christmas activities, there wasn't time to do this properly before the holidays. Today, we say three year groups performing.
The mini-concert commenced with Year 4, who warmed up with a rendition of the songs: 'Tony' then 'Uncle Tom'. They then picked up an array of instruments including recorders, drums, shakers and cow bells to perform a 'Samba' with full audience participation.
Year 1 performed some Victorian clapping games then the song "We are the year 1 band" before our Year 6 Ukulele's played us out with 'The Magic Travel Machine'. Many thanks to Mrs Rice and the pupils for a great end to the week.

Parents'/Carers' Consultation Days !
Today, letters are going home regarding the upcoming parental consultation days. These are a chance for parents/carers to talk with their child's class teacher about the progress they have made and an opportunity to discuss any issues there may be. We always find it to be a positive experience, both for parents/carers and for staff. The dialogue that takes place is often crucial for highlighting both strengths of pupils and ways to help them move forward and progress. On the letters are tear-off slips that should be returned as soon as possible to school. These are to guide our staff in allocating time slots.
Each phase group has been given a different day. These days are as follows:
Monday 26th January - Years 1 & 2 (Mr Cameron, Mrs Smart & Miss Stephenson)
Tuesday 27th January - Years 5 & 6 (Miss Atkinson/Ms Saint, Miss Pattrick & Mrs Brocklebank/Mrs Wilde)
Wednesday 28th January - Years 3 & 4 (Miss Baitson, Mr Ingram & Mrs McIlwaine)
Thursday 29th January - Reception (Miss Hatfield)
Friday 30th January - Nursery (Miss Johnson)

Stars of the Week!
EYFS - Danila
Phase 1-2 - Klaudia, Kyle & Nahim
Phase 3-4 - Ahmad, Alanta & Maryam
Phase 5-6 Jessica, Morgan & Seraphimna

Sports Clubs !
If your child has been allocated a place at a sports club, you will have received a letter. Unfortunately, due to the high demand, we were unable to allocate a place to every child. There is a waiting list and pupils will be allocated places as they arise. We will ensure that all of them will have the opportunity to attend a club at some point.

Attendance
In our bid to improve attendance our attendance officer Mrs Purkins and attendance assistance, Miss England are keeping everyone informed with the latest statistics, including the a line graph which shows how this year's figures compare with last year's. Please click here to see the new graph. .

Thank you to EYFS parents
!
Today, Miss Hatfield, our Reception teacher, has sent the following letter out:
"Dear Parents/ Carers,
I would just like to say a huge thank you to all of you who bought photographs and reindeer food at Christmas. The money raised has been put towards buying new resources for the classroom. So far we have bought a new fishing set for the water tray and new airflow balls for the outdoor area.
Thank you for your on-going support!
Miss Hatfield"

School Uniform Prices!
We would like to take this opportunity to thank our parents/carers for all your efforts in ensuring that children attend school dressed in our Stepney uniform. Over the years we have aimed to keep our costs down as low as possible.  However, due to an increase from our suppliers, from January 2015, the prices of our uniform have gone up slightly:
Book Bag - £4.00
Sweatshirts - £8.00
PE Kits (which consist of a white T-shirt, a pair or red shorts in a PE bag)- £8.00

Year 4 at Hull Ice Arena
!
Miss Baitson and her pupils completed a wonderful course of ice hockey training with a trip to the Ice Arena. They watched some of the hockey players training, then were involved with questioning them before the really fun part of the afternoon began. Donning helmets and skates, they took to the ice. In general, a great afternoon was had by all, although some found it easier and more confident on the ice. This has been a brilliant activity for our pupils. We would like to thank everyone at Hull Ice Arena for making it so great.

Rainbow Writing Winners !
This week's winners are:
Phase 1-2 Josh, Mohammed & Poppy
Phase 3-4 Ellie & Liya
Phase 5-6 Dominik, Edwin & Louis

New School Prayers !

Before Christmas, Mrs Smart and her year 2 pupils had composed some new school prayers. They have shared these with Father Malcolm, who really likes them. In our assembly today, it was suggested that other pupils may like to compose their own prayers. We have put a post on our kidblog site so that people to contribute.

Here are year 2's prayers:

Dear Lord,
Help us to do the things we should
To be to others kind and good
In all we do at work or play
To grow more loving everyday
Amen

Dear Lord God,
We give you thanks for our school
and all of the people who help us learn,
Thank you for our friends and families,
Please God help us to think about others before ourselves
and be kind to each other everyday,
Help us to look after our school
And care for the world we live in
Amen

Dear Lord
Thank you for the food we eat
Thank you for the World so sweet
Thank you for the birds that sing
Thank you God for everything,
Now let us pray for all the people in our school,
Who help us everyday,
Let us care for one another,
In each and every way,
And please God help us to try our best,
Every single day!
Amen

Year 4's Ice Hockey Evaluations !
Also on kidblog today are evaluations by year 4 on their ice hockey training that took place before the Christmas holidays. Please click here to access the kidblog site.

Welcome Back !
On behalf of everyone at Stepney, may we wish you a Happy New Year and welcome you back for the spring term. We have a great first day back to school, with staff and pupils quickly getting back into the swing of things!

Mrs McIlwaine Returns !
In the wake of Miss Northen leaving to join Pearson Primary School, our dear friend Mrs Sarah McIlwaine has returned to help us out for the rest of this academic year. Mrs McIlwaine was an outstanding teacher with us for years before deciding to take a career break. She has just returned from experiencing teaching in Costa Rica to take over Miss Northen's class. We are delighted to have Mrs McIlwaine back in our school and have no doubt that she'll be an excellent replacement for Miss Northen.

A Greek Start to the New Term !
No sooner have we started back but year 5/6 have started as they mean to go on. This term, their topic is the Groovy Greeks! As part of their inspiration day, they tasted lots of Greek food. From feta cheese to tzatziki, pupils tried some traditional Greek salad and lots more. Next they designed their own Greek menu and, surprise surprise, Miss Pattrick had set up a post on kidblog for pupils to comment on! What a brilliant start!

Cost of School Meals!
May we remind you that from 1st January 2015, we have started charging 50p for a school meal, instead of the previous price of £1. This applies to Key Stage 2 pupils only, as Key Stage 1 pupils are entitled to Free School Meals. We're hoping this will encourage more pupils to have school meals as we feel they give a healthy, nutritious alternative in the middle of the day.

May we remind all parents that this money needs to be paid. We still have a few parents who owe us school dinner money. The school is non-profit making when it charges for school meals. We do not have any funds to make up money not paid by parents.

Free School Meals !
If you consider that you may be eligible for Free School Meals, please
see our office staff for the necessary application forms. There may be other benefits as well as free school meals!

Telephone Numbers Please !
Please make us aware of any changes to your existing contact details so that we can ensure that you always receive our messages, whether by call or text, especially if you have had a new mobile phone over the Christmas period. There are occasions when it is vital that we contact parents immediately, such as if a child has a medical Emergency. We usually ask for two or three contacts numbers.

PE—Essential Requirements
For hygiene and safety reasons it is very important that children have PE kit in school on their PE days.  Children need to bring a plain white t-shirt and plain pair of red shorts to wear for indoor PE and need to bring tracksuits/leggings for outdoor PE. Pupils should not come in other PE kits, including replica football kits.

Children also need to make sure they have a pair of trainers for use outdoors; shoes are not suitable to wear in outdoor PE sessions.  All watches and earrings need to be removed for PE; if it is not possible to remove earrings they should be covered with tape for the duration of the lesson.  Children who have long hair must also tie it back during PE.

In order to ensure that PE kit is in school on the correct days it is helpful for children to bring their kit into school at the start of each week. PE is part of the National Curriculum and it is compulsory for children to take part unless they have a legitimate injury. If your child has an injury please speak directly to your child’s class teacher or send a short note to school informing us of the injury.

Asthma & Allergies
In order to ensure our school records are kept up to date, please inform us if your child has any allergies that we may not know about.  It is also crucial that we know about all our children who suffer from asthma.  If your child has asthma we ask that a spare inhaler is kept in school at all times in case of an emergency.
