February 2010

26.2.10
We were treated to a stunning performance of 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' by the M&M Theatre Company. Our pupils were, once again, enthralled by a quality performance!

With the rain pouring down, the outdoor classroom was completed on schedule. All that we are waiting for now is the wet pore surfacing to be laid. This should be on Monday or Tuesday, but it is totally dependent on the weather being drier! We still need to fill the planters with hard core and top soil. We have been told we need approximately 8 tonnes, so if there is anyone who might be able to help us with this, please contact us.

The construction work is complete, but the area is still fenced off, awaiting the wet pore surfacing to be laid. Although, it is clearly not a water proof area (as evidenced by the torrential rain) , the shades will be great during the sunny weather! We are really pleased we ordered the story teller's chair - we're sure it'll be a big hit with the pupils. Looking good!

25.2.10
The crowds were gathering outside the outdoor classroom construction area, with an air of increasing excitement. It was heavy going as the contractors dug through inches of concrete to prepare the holes for the benches and the seating. These were then concreted into place. The canopies go on tomorrow!

The seating has been concreted into place. Excitement mounted on the playground today as the children could finally see what the finished construction would look like!

24.2.10
Many thanks to all the parents/carers who attended the parents' day consultations for nursery, reception and years 1, 2 and 3. Once again, it provides a great opportunity for teachers and parents/carers to discuss how well the children are progressing. If there is anyone who missed today's event and still wishes to see the class teacher, please contact the teacher concerned or the office staff. We will be able to arrange an alternative time.
Tomorrow, it is the turn of Miss Northen in year 5. Next Monday, Mrs Phelps-Jones and the year 6 teachers will be holding their consultation afternoon.

Our three contractors are working feverishly with the outdoor classroom. The posts were concreted in today, the staging was constructed and the chairs and benches were positioned.

Constructing the stage! Positioning the seating Holes need to be dug for each of the seats.

We also held a session to help parents/carers fill in forms for the 'Access Arrangements' for the government supported computers and internet access. If you are still interested, please speak to the office staff, who will be pleased to help.

23.2.10
Monica Davison joined us for assembly this morning. She is from the Hull Polish School, which is based at Bricknell Primary School on Saturday Mornings. As well as telling the children about the school she brought details of a 'Polish for Beginners' course. This starts on Saturday 27th February at 10.30am at Bricknell and runs for fifteen weeks until the 10th of July. Each session is one hour long and is only £3 per family per session.
For more details contact Monica on 07526144246 or email mondavison@googlemail.com

More work has been taking place in the playground: The area has been marked out, footings dug, to support the uprights, and the planters assembled. The current schedule is for the wooden construction to be completed by this Friday. We will then have to wait for the floor covering to be laid.

Health & Safety First! Digging the footings holes! Assembling the planters Good progress has been made on day two!

The quiet area starts to take shape! A view from above! Busy at work!

Tomorrow we have the first of our parents' days. These will be for Nursery in the morning, then Reception and classes 1, 2/3A and 2/3B in the afternoon.

We will also be holding sessions for the 'Access Arrangements for Computers.' Before the half term holiday, letters were sent out to all parents/carers informing them of this government initiative to provide computers and internet connections to families receiving certain benefits. During tomorrow's session, there will be staff available to help you complete the forms. These will begin at 2pm and will now take place upstairs in Miss Northen's classroom.

22.2.10
Welcome back after the half term holiday! The lorry, with the materials for our outdoor classroom, arrived on time and the contractors have started to mark out the area ! An ongoing record of all the work can be seen by going to the 'Building History' page then looking at the 'Outdoor Classroom' link.

The lorry arrives! Unloading the materials! That's some solid looking timber!

13.2.10
Just a reminder that we are on half term holiday for the next week. School starts again on Monday 22nd February.

12.2.10
A Fond Farewell
This week we say good bye to Mrs Stephenson and Ms Thomas who have been with us on teaching practice. We are all grateful for all their hard work and wish them well for the future.

Outdoor Classroom
Weather permitting, contractors will be starting work on our outdoor classroom area after the holiday. As you may recall, we have been waiting for planning permission and listed building consent since July 2009. May we apologise to any disruption this may cause-it will mean the bicycle rack will not be in its usual place. We are going to wait until the structure is completed before deciding on the best place for the bikes. Please click here to see our plans

11.2.10
Chinese New Year Assembly
During Assembly time, we celebrated the Chinese New Year, which falls on Sunday 14th February this year. The children learned that it is the year of the tiger. Children from the Foundation Stage showed us their wonderful lanterns and paper Chinese Dragons.

Parents' Days
You should have received letters inviting you to Parents' days after half term. At this half-way point in the year, this is a great time for you to find out how your child is doing at school. This includes both academic achievement and progress and how they cope with school in general.
If you haven't got a letter, please arrange to see the class teacher to choose a convenient time for you.
The sessions will be as follows:

Wednesday 24th February
9am-12-Nursery Class
1.30pm-6.30pm Reception, Year 1, 2 and 3

Thursday 25th February
1.30pm-6.30pm Miss Northen's class

Monday 1st March
1.30pm-6.30pm Year 6 and Mrs Phelps-Jones Year 4/5 class

10.2.10
Speedmark Postponed
We were due to have the speedmark event at school today but the man organising it was caught up in an accident on the way so we have had to cancel it. We realise that many children are disappointed by this. It has now been rescheduled for Wednesday 3rd March.

9.2.10
Year 4 and 5 Research Study
Pupils in year 4 and 5 will have received a consent letter this week. This is from Amy Godfrey, who is undertaking a dissertation at the University of Hull. It is collect data for her research and no pupil's name will be used as a result of this. Please complete the consent form and return to your child's class teacher.

8.2.10
New Governors
We are delighted to announce that we have two new parent governors. These are Mr Alan Clark and Mr Dhudu Miah. On behalf of the school we would like to welcome both gentlemen onto our governing body and wish them well in their new posts.

Medicines
May we ask you to let the school know if your child is taking a medication. It is always useful for the class teacher to know, especially as children do have accidents sometimes that we may have been able to avoid, if we were aware about certain conditions.
Obviously, any long term treatment or medicine needs to be on our records.

5.2.10
Speedmark Returns to School!
Just a reminder that next Wednesday we will be having the Speedmark people in. Every year our pupils enjoy this event. By collecting sponsorship money then can win different prizes, including footballs and sticker packs as well as earning money for the school to but more sports equipment. We already have our sights on some new gym equipment to help out with the new coaching beginning after half term.

4.2.10
Athletics Stars!
Miss Northen and Mrs McIlwaine took ten children from years five and six to an athletics event at Ennederdale this week. We are still awaiting the final scores and positions from this, but our children were, once again, a credit to us.
Year 5 Assembly
Miss Northen's children told us about the work they have been doing on 'Explorers' as well as the French they have been learning and some super literacy work. Many thanks to all involved for a great assembly.

3.2.10
New Club
We have a new club which has started on a Thursday after school. The Multi Skills clubs is for children in years 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6. If you would like your child to attend please call at the office and complete a consent form. There are plenty of places still...

2.2.10
More Sports at Stepney!
Over the last few years we have had a wide variety of extra sports on offer, ranging from table tennis to archery. This is largely due to the fantastic organising by Mrs Brocklebank and Mrs McIlwaine and also due to the PE partnership we are in with St. Mary's college. After half term we are having an ex-Olympic gymnast, Natalie Laws in. She'll be working with Reception and Year 1 children on Monday afternoons and then with some other children after school.

1.2.10
At the moment we have courses taking place, in school, to help parents. These are starting to prove more popular but there are still many spare places.
We have a Wednesday afternoon class, entitled 'Keeping up with children in Literacy'. This lasts for 5 weeks between 1.10pm and 3.10pm each week. During the course you will:
" Learn more about your child's literacy work in school;
" Gain confidence in speaking English and help your child to be more confident in speaking and listening, reading and writing;
" Make games and practical activities and discover new ways to support your children at home;
" Have fun, meet other parents and share ideas

As part of a 15 week Numeracy course, on Thursday afternoons between 1.10pm and 3.10pm, you will share ideas about supporting your children to be more confident with their number skills and in using shapes, measures, tables, graphs andcharts.
