December 2014

Phase 3-4 End in Style !
Our week of Christmas productions ended with a poetry & song-based spectacular from this phase. They were absolutely brilliant! Many thanks to the staff who helped prepare the pupils for this fabulous production.

A Fond Farewell !
Our best wishes go to Miss Northen, who is leaving us today. After over six years as a student and qualified teacher at Stepney, Miss Northen is moving to Pearson Primary to teach at the start of January. As well as being a great classroom teacher, she has led our school's PE initiatives for the last few years. We will certainly miss her but hope that she enjoys the transition to our near neighbours. In a special assembly this afternoon, we presented cards and gifts to Miss Northen.

Attendance Winners !
We had a special prize draw for parents of all those pupil who had achieved 97% or more attendance for the whole of the autumn term. Mr Morfitt, our Chair of Governors, drew Ellie's mum as the winner of the impressive hamper, donated by Asda on Beverley Road. He also made the draw for the pupils who had achieved 100% attendance for this second autumn half term. Precious was the recipient of a 'Love to Shop' voucher.

Attendance
In our bid to improve attendance our attendance officer Mrs Purkins and attendance assistance, Miss England are keeping everyone informed with the latest statistics, including the a line graph which shows how this year's figures compare with last year's. Please click here to see the new graph. .

Those Pupils with 100% Attendance this week !
The following figures show the percentage of pupils achieving 100% attendance for the last week of the school year. The arrows show whether this is higher or lower than last week or they stayed the same.
Foundation Stage: 90%(3 pupils didn't achieve 100%)
Phase 1/2: 87.14%(8 didn't)
Phase 3/4: 88.35%(7 didn't)
Phase 5/6: 88.05%(8 didn't)
Whole School Average: 88.36 %↑ (26 didn't have 100% attendance)

Class Attendance for the week !
The following figures show each class’s overall attendance figures for the week. The arrows show whether this is higher or lower than last week or they stayed the same.
Foundation Stage: 94%
Phase 1/2: 95.6%
Phase 3/4: 93.16%
Phase 5/6: 93.04%
Whole School Average for the 2014-15 academic year so far: 95.99↓
This is the first time our attendance has dropped below 96% for weeks. There have been a number of pupils who have been off with sickness this week, which has had an impact on our figures.

The Best Christmas Service Yet !
Our Christmas Service at St. Mary's, Sculcoates this morning, was arguably one of the best we have had. Beginning at 10am, Mr Browning and then Father James welcomed everyone. We then had a succession of year 6 readers: Jessica, Robert, Morgan, Patryck and Ellie who recounted the main parts of the Christmas story. These were interspersed with carols: phase 1-2 sang 'It was on a starry night', phase 3-4 sang 'Come and join the celebrations' and we all sang 'Calypso Carol'. Mrs Rice and her choir then entertained us with four great numbers: 'Angel Band', 'Indian Huron Carol', 'Father Christmas' and 'Said the Cat to the Mouse'. Mr Browning explained how our pupils' ukulele playing has improved since Mrs Rice joined Stepney as our musical expert. Our year 6 pupils strummed their way through 'Jingle Bells' while the rest of us sang. Mr Browning then addressed pupils, staff and the congregation of parents/carers and friends. He spoke about the tremendous efforts of our school community to send 'Love Aid' boxes to Sierra Leone, as their Christmas activities are being severely limited or even cancelled due to the Ebola Virus. He then spoke about the RAK, or Random Acts of Kindness, that our pupils perform on a daily basis. Father James then gave a speech of gratitude to us and led us in prayer.
The penultimate song was 'The Twelve Days of Christmas'. Mrs Rice organised us to every couple of rows of pupils, staff and parents performed actions for each of the different days. Our service concluded at 11am with us singing 'We Wish You A Merry Christmas'. It was a truly inspiring event! Our profound thanks go to St Mary's staff and to Mrs Rice.

Real Aid Certificate !
Cailey and Morgan, our two International Pupil Councillors, took a certificate and letter around all our classes this afternoon. This had come from Real Aid, thanking us for sending the Love In A Box donations.

17.12.14
Cinderella at Hull Truck !
Our Key Stage 2 year groups walked down to the Hull Truck Theatre this morning to see a dazzling show. This year, it was the story of 'Cinerella'. Usually, these Christmas shows have one or two people in the cast, but this year it was seven, including some brilliant and versatile musicians, who played a range of instruments. As always, our pupils were perfectly behaved and a credit to the school, both when walking to and from the theatre and whilst watching the production.

Christmas Crafts !
Parents/Carers of our year 5/6 pupils enjoyed a wonderful afternoon, making Christmas cards with their children. It was another enjoyable and fun afternoon. These are becoming more popular all the time. Many thanks to everyone who attended.

Christmas Service in the Church Tomorrow !
We will be starting out annual Christmas Service at 10am at St. Mary's, Sculcoates in the morning. Please feel free to join us. We'd love to see loads of people join us!

Reminder: Changes to the Cost of School Meals!
Just to remind you that it has been agreed that from 1st January 2015, we will be charging 50p for a school meal, instead of the current price of £1. This is in line with the Local Authority's move to reduce the cost of school meals by this same amount. This applies to Key Stage 2 pupils only, as Key Stage 1 pupils are entitled to Free School Meals. We're hoping this will encourage more pupils to have school meals as we feel they give a healthy, nutritious alternative in the middle of the day.

16.12.14
School Uniform Prices!
We would like to take this opportunity to thank our parents/carers for all your efforts in ensuring that children attend school dressed in our Stepney uniform. Over the years we have aimed to keep our costs down as low as possible.  However, due to an increase from our suppliers, from January 2015, the prices of our uniform will be as follows:
Book Bag - £4.00
Sweatshirts - £8.00
PE Kits - £8.00

Hull Collegiate School Scholarships !
We have received the following information from Hull Collegiate School, one of the private schools in this region. Letter have gone out today for our year 6 pupils which say:
10 fully funded academic scholarships at Hull Collegiate School”
Next year, Hull Collegiate School will celebrate its tenth anniversary, following the merger of Hull Grammar School and Hull High School in 2005. To mark this event, the school is offering 10 fully funded academic scholarships with effect from September 2015.
The scholarships will be available for your current Year 6 pupils, so I would be grateful if you could inform those parents who you believe would be interested in taking advantage of this opportunity for their children.
The scholarships will be offered based on academic ability; we intend to test pupils on 21st January 2015. Appointments to meet me and view the school may be made at any time by contacting the school’s registrar, Mrs S McEwan.

Foundation Stage Nativity !
We were treated to a magical nativity by our Nursery and Reception pupils today. Performing the 'Wriggly Nativity' to a packed house of parents and carers, we were entertained by brilliant singing and acting. A huge thank you goes out to all the staff who made this possible today. A first-class performance.

Love In A Box Donations Collected!
Today, a 'Real Aid' van arrived at school to take away the 'Love in a Box' donations from pupils, parents and staff. Many thanks to all of those who have contributed to this. ‘Real Aid’ (Registered charity No 1089316), who are based at Tickton, near to Beverley, are sending these to Sierra Leone. The man collecting the boxes explained to Cailey & Morgan, our International Pupil Councillors, that there has been a lock-down on Christmas this year in Sierra Leone. People have been asked not to travel to be with family members for Christmas. This is to contain the Ebola virus, which has already claimed thousands of lives. Our boxes will be going to orphans and other pupils who are in a desperate plight. In total, we have sent 36 boxes.

15.12.14
Phase 1-2 and the Whoops-a-Daisy Angel
!
Our season of Christmas performances got off to a rousing opening today with phase 1-2 giving us their rendition of 'Whoops-a-Daisy Angel' and it was excellent! It is clear that a great deal of work had gone into producing a show that captivated a hall full of parents/carers and other pupils. What great start to this week's activities. Many thanks to the staff who helped prepare the pupils for this fabulous production.

12.12.14
Christmas Performances !
We are looking forward to this year’s Christmas performances. All performances begin at 10:30am.
Year 1/2 - Monday 15th December
EYFS - Tuesday 16th December
Year 3/4 - Friday 19th December
As always, the staff and pupils have been working hard to make these performances successful.
If you are intending to bring a small child, please show consideration to the children performing, by being willing to leave the hall if your child becomes unsettled—sitting near to the end of a row will make this easier for you.
Alternatively, we are able to offer you a crèche facility. This will be lead by school staff and of course, is free of charge.
We also wish to inform you that, due to space and health and safety reasons, you will not be able to take pushchairs into the hall. To assist you with this, we will provide a buggy park elsewhere in the school.
We would greatly appreciate your support in this matter and look forward to seeing you all next week.

Christmas Jumper Day !
It was great to see most of the pupils plus all of the staff in Christmas jumpers today. What a super turn out for this worthwhile cause.

Change of Address Plea !
We are still finding it difficult to contact some parents. Please notify us of changes to address and phone numbers. We do have rare occasions when we have to get in touch with parents quickly and need contact details to be kept up to date. One day this week one of our youngest pupils feel over at lunchtime and gashed his head. It was clear that, despite the immediate medical aid that was given by trained first aiders, he needed to go to hospital to have a couple of stitches. Fortunately, his mum was easy to contact and came to the school promptly. Other times in the past, we have not been able to get in touch with parents: staff have taken their child to the hospital for treatment but the first time we have been able to contact parents was hours later at hometime. This is clearly not a good situation, so please provide us with the correct information.

Christmas Fayre !
We had yet another successful fayre this evening. Led by Mr Morfitt and his helpers, it was a most enjoyable occasion, complete with refreshments, raffle draw and stalls. Of course, such an event is not complete without a visit from 'The Man in Red'. Father Christmas graced us with his presence, much to the delight of all the pupils. Our profound thanks go to everyone who made this a roaring success.

Christmas Dinner !
We all enjoyed a delightful Christmas Dinner today to start getting us in the festive mood. With the Christmas tree looking wonderful, and Christmas music playing, everyone tucked into a great meal. Many thanks to the staff at St. Charles' kitchen for providing us with this.

Year 6 - IMPS!
Our year 6 pupils had a brilliant morning with NHS staff taking them through a varied programme of first aid skills. We have been involved in the IMPs for years now and we've never been disappointed. The pupils learned all about resuscitation skills and were allowed to practise on models. They also learned about bandages and stitches and made removable plaster casts of fingers! Everyone enjoyed the fun activities and learned a great deal.

Rainbow Writing Winners !
This week's winners are:
Phase 1-2 - Kamil & Maria
Phase 3-4 - Sarah, Taylor & Wiktor
Phase 5-6 - Andrew, Connor & Shakira

9.12.14
The Ipad King Returns !
If there was ever anyone who deserved this title more, then it is definitely Mr David Andrews. Over the last couple of years, he has been a guiding light in transforming the ICT skills of pupils and staff. Today, he was working with Mrs Smart's year 2 pupils on a project focussing on Samuel Pepys' diary; after play he worked with our own ICT guru, Miss Baitson, and her year 4 pupils in creating their own apps with green screen technology and in the afternoon, he was inspiring year 6 with even more programming skills. Miss Pattrick, in particular, has been doing some excellent computing work with the oldest pupils this term but wanted to use even more sophisticated software. Pupils have already used the 'Kodable' apps and shared their skills with parents and carers during their recent exhibition. 'Hopscotch' was the app used today. As usual, all our pupils were enthused and engaged with the work. It was wonderful to have David in again. Also, his business partner, Mr Chris Williams has been talking to Miss Baitson and Mr Browning about exciting new ideas for the spring term so... watch this space!

Healthy Body = Healthy Minds Launch !
We've had a few visitors into school today for different reasons. A lecturer from Scarborough College came in to watch a student teacher's lesson; an advisor from our Local Authority came for the usual autumn meetings about data that all schools have and Mr Andrews was there as well. All commented on the staff, who were all wearing new Stepney PE shirts and the pupils, who were decked out in PE gear and tracksuits. That was because today marked the launch of our brand new Healthy Body = Healthy Minds campaign. This is aimed at everyone increasing their fitness; improving their diets; taking part in more sport and, principally, having lots of fun doing physical activities. Mr Darwood, who is the PE coach and mentor working across Clifton, Pearson and Stepney Primary schools presented an assembly to everyone this morning. The hall was packed with staff and pupils as they listened to Mr Darwood's presentation and took part in a range of exercises. The response from the pupils was brilliant. Many have signed up for a range of new and exciting PE clubs, which we hope will boost our already packed array of PE events.

Kidblog Rules Okay!
We've opened posts on our kidblog page on both events today and have already had loads of comments from pupils and staff. Some parents have started putting on comments as well - please feel free to do so. May we remind everyone that we check every single post and comment which goes on our kidblog pages to ensure that our e-safety rules are being adhered to.

Foundation Stage Exhibition !
We had the last of our autumn exhibitions today. Our Nursery and Reception classes finished the present schedule of these events in fine style. Christmas Jumper Day on December 12th !
Following the inaugural fundraising day last year, we are again supporting this national campaign and encouraging everyone to come in a Christmas Jumper on Friday 12th December. It was certainly a great day of fun when pupils and staff came in a range of themed jumpers showing santas, Christmas trees and reindeers. Please help us again. Jumpers may be bought quite cheaply from shops all around the city and the money paid for them goes to charity. We are asking the pupils to bring in £1 and come wearing their jumpers.

Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds Campaign !
As part of our commitment to your child’s health and well-being, we are encouraging ALL of our children and staff at Stepney to try and be more active. Although we already do a lot in terms of quality PE and school sport, we feel we could do more. Therefore we are launching “HEALTHY BODIES, HEALTHY MINDS!” campaign to encourage everyone to make sure we GET ACTIVE, STAY ACTIVE so they are more likely to be fit and healthy as they grow into adults.

To help bring the campaign to the attention of all children, staff and parents, we are having a COME TO SCHOOL IN SPORTS GEAR day on Tuesday 9th December.
You might like to encourage your child to wear a tracksuit, football/rugby shirt, trainers OR dressed as their favourite sports star. The children DO NOT need to bring any money to school.

During the day, your children will be encouraged to get active during lessons, playtime and lunchtime. They will also be given the opportunity to sign up to a variety of new clubs, including:

The 7 minute workout before school and at playtimes
ACTIVEYoga sessions before school
ACTIVECircuits training during lunchtimes
ULTRALeagues at lunchtimes (netball, hockey, football, basketball etc.)
*If you wish to find out more about our ‘HEALTHY BODIES, HEALTHY MINDS!” campaign and what you could do to help your children and your family be more active, join us in our school assembly on Tuesday 9th December at 10:15am. The assembly will finish at 10:45am.
Many thanks for your continued support.
