The Stepney Star Daily Diary
Here is the News...
Don’t Forget May Day
It is the May Day holiday on Monday 3rd May so school will reopen on Tuesday 4th May.
Year 6 Assembly
Year 6 dazzled us with a fantastic assembly, all about their latest literacy work. With super clear speaking they enlightened us about the book ‘The Boy in a Girls’ Bathroom’ by Louis Sachar (A Must Read!). There is no doubt that our oldest pupils have had a veritable literacy feast this year with the likes of classic novelists such as Dickens and modern writers like Sachar.
Potato Head Winners
In January we had an invitation from Beverley Garden Centre for pupils to take part in a potato modelling competition. The instructions were very simple—use a potato of any size and, with a vivid imagination, create a model using any materials you want. Of course, we were up for the challenge and pupils produced some fantastic models. Mrs Bayley, our chief ‘green-fingered’ member of staff joined pupils and parents at the garden centre to receive prizes of certificates and vouchers plus an assortment of seeds, potatoes, compost etc for school.
We finally received the prizes for our speedmark challenge. Children had to raise money for a sponsored football shoot out at school. 26 pupils raised under £15 and received a sticker book and pack of stickers; another 26 received a mini football for raising between £15 and £30; a large football went to 3 children who had raised between £30 and £45 and Brina, Edward, Charlotte S, Lewis C and Kallam M. won a large ball and stickers for collecting over £45. Well done to all concerned. In total we raised £756, with Mrs Phelps-Jones class earning the most—£220.60! The organisers keep some of this to pay for the prizes and the rest goes into school funds!
Attendance & ‘Never Lates’ Certificates
This morning, we had our termly assembly to present certificates and badges to those children who have had 100% during the Spring and those who had never been late.
Forty-eight children received 100% attendance awards and one hundred and twenty children received a ‘Never late' certificate.
Parents and Carers should receive copies of Curriculum summaries and pupil targets for the term today. If you do not, then please enquire at the school office.
Foundation Stage Assembly
Our youngest children have been enjoying watching their chicks growing during the last week. During their assembly they treated us to a recap on the exciting developments that have been taking place in the incubator !
Woodford Gymnastics competition
Today, five excited pupils from years 3 and 4 went to Woodford leisure centre to compete in a city wide gymnastics competition. The sports hall was set up with performance mats, vaulting boxes and judging tables. It was a great atmosphere as we waited for all the participating schools to arrive. Overcoming any nerves Jonathan, Aidas, Wictoria,
Nikola and Bethany showed off their practised elements: a floor routine, some body management moves and a vault. They all did themselves and Stepney proud and ended up in second place with a score of 89.8, beaten only by Victoria Dock School who pipped us at the post with 89.9! Well done children, it couldn’t have been closer.
It was also a day for a nursery and reception children to visit Pearson Park, to investigate the facilities and wildlife.

If you would like your child to attend please contact our school office or your child’s teacher.
Don’t Count Your Chicks!
While we have new pupils starting at Stepney most weeks, we are actually having some new arrivals hatching in situ at the moment. The Foundation Stage are watching twelve eggs hatching out in the incubator. These ‘hyline’ chicks will be staying with us for another week when they will then be taken to live a ‘free range’ life on a farm. In the meantime it gives our pupils a wonderful opportunity to watch nature at work!
A minutes silence
During our Thursday Assembly this week, we observed a minutes silence in support of our Polish pupils and their families. Following the tragic accident, in which the president of Poland and numerous officials died in a plane crash in Russia, many of our pupils have been feeling the loss. On behalf of everyone at Stepney, may we express our deepest sympathy.
Just a reminder that we have a Police pop-in surgery in the main hall tonight, if you have any concerns, queries or things you want to discuss with the officers.
Planting Up Time!
During the Easter holiday, we had our new outdoor classroom planters filled with top soil. Each class is being allocated part of these to develop. We will be growing vegetables as well as flowers and shrubs.
Welcome back. We trust you all have had a good Easter break and are ready for the summer term.
